Bend and Brew at Three Notch'd

By Meghan Tocci

I’ll tell you what I don’t usually do Saturday mornings.

Exercise.

I’ll tell you what makes exercise on a Saturday morning easier.

Beer.

But perhaps this past Saturday I’d been swept away by the winds of change. I decided to head downtown to Three Notch’d brewery for their 10 a.m. Bend and Brew held on Saturdays right in their taproom.

I brought a mat and my good sport of a boyfriend along with me. I had little to no expectations going into the event, but being greeted with doughnuts and coffee right off the bat had me stoked. I was prepared to downward dog all up on the cement floor if it meant the free doughnuts kept coming.

After filling out a participation waver and paying $10 I could set up my mat to prep for the class. The room started to fill up with a total array of characters. From yogis to beer junkies, I felt totally at ease in the crowd.

An instructor from a local studio kicked off the morning with some meditation that, I’ll be honest, had me giggling.

My inability to stay serious was made 100 times worse when she used a padded baton to hit a metal bowl over my head to send good vibrations down my body. Once I realized it was going to be one of those kinds of mornings, I was surprised with how much I got into the session.

It was a relaxing and slow flow session with a lady who knew her stuff (however quirky). It felt like a solid workout, but nothing that a beginner to yoga couldn’t handle.

The uniqueness of having a yoga lesson in a brewery was worth the trip alone. For anyone who’s been in Three Notch’d before, you know their space is warm and inviting. With all the furniture moved from the center however there was an almost VIP, behind the scenes feel to the space. One thing I love about Harrisonburg is the small-town community feel. Everything about the event that Three Notch’d put on gave me that Gilmore Girls Stars Hollow feeling I crave.

I can say with 100 percent positivity I’ll be getting my bend and brew on as long as Three Notch’d keeps hosting. I’d invite anyone to come along with me. I’ll be the one sweating a little too much on the pink mat with the doughnut crumbs and glazed residue.
